From the time we small, cricket was life—whether it was pelting a soft ball in de yard or sneaking a radio to school to catch a quick update on the match. And now, with the Guyana Amazon Warriors always in the mix, it’s even bigger. There’s something about seeing our Warriors on de field that makes you feel like home, even when yuh thousands of miles away in New York.

But let’s face it, watching the game is only half of the experience. The other half? It’s the food, the drinks, the vibes, and most importantly, the pride of being Guyanese. That’s where Shop Little Guyana comes in, helping you set the perfect stage for that authentic Guyanese cricket watch party.

Cricket and Guyana: A Love Story Since Time!

Cricket in Guyana isn’t just another sport—it’s tradition, heritage, and a true community vibe. Since back in de days, we’ve always loved our cricket. From the Colonial days when British rule introduced the sport, it quickly took over as something we all could rally behind. Generations later, whether you’re in Georgetown or right here in Little Guyana, Queens, the love for cricket still runs deep.

Then came CPL—the Caribbean Premier League—and with it, our beloved Guyana Amazon Warriors. They’ve been giving us reasons to celebrate and even more reason to rally as a community. The Warriors consistently bring the energy, and it’s no surprise that wherever you find a Guyanese crowd, there’s bound to be a debate on who bowled better, who missed a catch, or whether we have the best batsmen in the league (spoiler alert: we do!).

Who Are the Guyana Amazon Warriors?

For the uninitiated, the Guyana Amazon Warriors are one of the top teams in the CPL (trust meh, I ain’t biased). Representing Guyana on the world stage, the Warriors have consistently been one of the fiercest competitors in the league. With big names like Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran, and Keemo Paul, they’ve earned a loyal fanbase both at home and abroad.

And the thing about cricket? When the Warriors take the field, we not just watching a match—we’re watching with passion. You see the auntie dem waving Guyana flags, uncle bawling at the umpire from his couch, and cousins placing ‘friendly wagers’ on the outcome. It’s all part of the experience.

The Warriors are known for their aggressive playing style, strategic bowling, and batting that keeps the pressure on the opponents. We deh pon top often, so you know the stakes are high. Win or lose, the love for our Warriors never falters.

And you can’t talk about the Guyana Amazon Warriors without revisiting some of their most memorable matches. Here are a few that we still talk about, whether it’s at a family gathering or liming with friends over a game of dominoes.

  • 2019 CPL Final: This one was bittersweet. The Warriors had an unbeaten run up until the final, only to narrowly miss out on the trophy. But we doh worry—we proud of how they played. The unbeaten streak alone was worth celebrating.
  • 2020 CPL Semi-Final: A nail-biter that had everyone on the edge of their seats. Warriors came back strong, giving us hope for the future and showing that we always in the fight.
  • 2023 CPL Win: After years of coming close but falling just short, the Guyana Amazon Warriors finally clinched their first-ever CPL title at the Warriors’ home ground, Providence Stadium in Guyana.

I’m New to Cricket, What Do I Need to Know?

So, yuh might be thinking, “This cricket thing sound exciting, but I eh know nothing about the sport!” Don’t worry, I got yuh. Whether you’re a complete newbie or just need a lil refresher, here’s a simple breakdown of cricket so you can keep up with all the action and lingo.

How Cricket Works: The Basics

Cricket is like a cousin to baseball, but with some Caribbean flair. Two teams, 11 players each, take turns batting and fielding. The main goal? To score more runs (points) than the other team. But, of course, it’s not that straightforward, so let me explain:

The Pitch: Cricket is played on an oval-shaped field, with a 22-yard strip in the middle called the pitch. This is where the action happens—batsmen face bowlers, runs are scored, and wickets (think of them like outs in baseball) are taken.

Batting and Bowling:

  • One team bats while the other bowls and fields.
  • The bowler throws the ball (it’s more of a sling/overarm style, unlike a baseball pitch) toward the batsman.
  • The batsman tries to hit the ball and score runs by running back and forth between the wickets or hitting the ball to the boundary for automatic runs (like a home run, but different).

Wickets: At each end of the pitch, there are three wooden stumps with two small bails balanced on top—this is the wicket. The bowler’s main job is to try and hit the wicket with the ball to get the batsman out.

Runs:

  • Singles/Doubles: If the batsman hits the ball and runs to the opposite end of the pitch, they score a run. Run back, you get two!
  • Boundary: If the batsman hits the ball and it reaches the edge of the field (called the boundary) without being caught, the team automatically gets 4 runs.
  • Six: If the ball is hit over the boundary without touching the ground, it’s an automatic 6 runs—kinda like a grand slam home run!

Overs: An over is a set of 6 deliveries (throws) by a bowler. In limited-over cricket, like in the CPL, teams usually have 20 overs to score as many runs as they can. That’s where the Guyana Amazon Warriors shine, with their powerful hitting and strategic bowling.

Getting Out: There are different ways to get a batsman out:

  • Bowled: The bowler hits the stumps and knocks the bails off.
  • Caught: A fielder catches the ball before it hits the ground.
  • LBW (Leg Before Wicket): If the batsman’s leg blocks the ball from hitting the stumps (without hitting the bat), the umpire can call them out.
  • Run Out: If the fielding team hits the stumps with the ball while the batsmen are running between wickets and they haven’t reached the crease (a safe zone).
