Rick’s Resto & Lounge

If you’ve ever swung by 2526 Broadway for some jerk chicken or rum punch vibes, you’ll remember the old Tropics Restaurant & Bar, a longtime East Indian & Caribbean comfort food spot in Schenectady. While it was a local go-to for curries and spicy eats (and had a festive menu full of island classics), that chapter has officially come to a close. The Tropics brand is no longer operating in its original form… but don’t panic, the flavor didn’t leave town because Rick’s Resto & Lounge is here!

Good Stuff Elevated Atmosphere: Easily the most 'Instagrammable' Caribbean interior in Schenectady. Perfect for birthdays and anniversaries. Menu Consistency: The focus on 'Caribbean Fusion' means the classics (Oxtail, Curry) are treated with high-end culinary respect. Digital Savvy: With a new website and active social media, Rick’s is much easier to engage with for reservations and menus.
Bad Stuff Brand Confusion: Because of the recent rebrand from Tropics, some GPS units and old reviews might still lead people astray—always search for 'Rick's Resto 518' directly. Premium Experience: The upscale vibe can sometimes mean a higher price point than your standard 'hole-in-the-wall' takeout spot, but the quality justifies the cost. Alcohol: Does not offer alcoholic drinks.
Summary
The rebranding of Tropics to Rick’s Resto & Lounge isn't just a name change, it’s a declaration of quality. Rick’s has taken the 'upscale' promise of the Broadway location and actually delivered on the 'Resto' (Restaurant) experience. The interior feels polished and intentional, creating a space where the food is the guest of honor. It’s clear that Rick’s wants to be more than just a local spot, it’s aiming to be the premier Caribbean culinary landmark in the Capital Region.

🌴 Rest in Flavors — What Happened to Tropics Restaurant & Bar

Sitting in Tropics’ old home on Broadway, Rick’s Resto has recharged that island energy with a fresh vibe, updated menu, and a focus on Caribbean warmth meets local soul food comfort. Family-owned and community-driven, this spot is now one of the best places in the 518 to get your fix of bold spices, juicy protein, and fried plantains.

  • 🏝️ Island vibes without the airfare — Caribbean taste, local warmth.
  • 🍽️ Family-friendly spot — perfect for date nights or family dinners.
  • 💃 Spice and nice — bold flavor that’ll make you wanna dance (no shame in the conga line).

🍽️ What to Order (You’ll Thank Me Later 😋)

Rick’s brings a taste of the Caribbean without needing a passport:

  • Slow-Cooked Oxtail – buttery, savory, and begging for coconut rice.
  • Jerk Chicken – spicy, smoky, and everything nice.
  • Plantains (Sweet & Green) – crispy edges, sweet heart — total snack magic.
  • Fresh Seafood Specialties – fish that tastes like a beach day on a plate.
