Day Of The Event
Every event teaches you something new, and this year’s Schenectady Caribbean Day 2024 was no exception. Despite the 40%, 50%, 60%, 70% and 99% chance of rain that loomed over us as the day progressed, we stayed hopeful that the weather might surprise us. But as the saying goes, “The show must go on,” and with no rain date available, organizers were committed.
Organizers started setting up dark and early at around 6-7am. But as we got closer to showtime, the skies had other plans. The rain started coming down, and to top it off, power surges causes the sound to cut off on multiple occurrences. Talk about a nerve-wracking moment. However, the crew got everything restarted and the show kept on.
As the rain poured harder, as expected people started leaving, but about an hour after the crowd cleared out we noticed something amazing—More and more attendees starting showing up, armed with ponchos, umbrellas, and even tents. Instead of heading home, they came armed and ready to dance, and celebrated in the rain!
I was honestly shocked I’ve never seen anything quite like this—a crowd that knew it was going to rain but still showed up. I really thought the show would be canceled or rescheduled. One thing I learned is rain or shine, Caribbean culture is truly about unity.
A huge shoutout to the Schenectady administration, volunteers, sponsors, bands, artists, the officials directly from Guyana, Minister Dr. Ashni Singh, Consulate/Ambassador Mr. Brotherson, Mr. Zulfikar, and Mr. Joe Yosuff for making this event a success. Special props to Schenectady Caribbean Day organizers, Philip Fields, Junior Hitlall, John Mootoveeren for pulling it off again!
