Good Stuff Beautiful new interior (great for photos/Instagram). Central location on Broadway with easier access and parking. Small or Large Catering Requests.
Bad Stuff Higher-end atmosphere may come with slightly longer wait times. Dishes are pricier that other Caribbean restaurants.
Summary
Tropics has traded its old State Street skin for a polished, upscale home on Broadway, but don't let the fancy decor fool you the 'sweet hand' in the kitchen remains untouched. Under new management, the space has transitioned into a premier dining destination. Tropics 2.0 is officially the new standard for Caribbean excellence in Schenectady.

The New Vibe: From Lounge to “Upscale Dining”

The first thing you’ll notice is the cleanliness. The new owners have moved away from the “dark lounge” aesthetic of State Street and into a bright, welcoming space on Broadway. It feels like an actual restaurant first and a bar second. It’s a great spot for those who want authentic food without the loud music and smoke of a typical West Indian bar.

  • Stunning Atmosphere: The renovation is top-tier; it’s a place you’d be proud to take someone for a birthday or a nice dinner.
  • Generous Portions: Despite the upscale branding, they haven’t gone ‘small’ on the servings. You’re still getting a proper Guyanese-sized plate.
  • Family-Friendly Environment: Without the bar crowd, it’s currently a very peaceful and clean environment for families.

The Menu: Traditional Roots, Elevated Flavor

Tropics continues to specialize in Traditional Caribbean Cuisine. Even with the new look, the “sweet hand” in the kitchen is focused on authenticity.

Must-Try Dishes:

  • Signature Seafood: Their fish dishes (Snapper and Shrimp) remain the star of the show. Whether steamed, fried, or brown-stewed, the seasoning is deep and traditional.
  • Curry Goat & Oxtail: These staples are the true test of any Guyanese/Caribbean spot. At the new Tropics, expect tender, slow-cooked meats that respect the old-school recipes.
  • Chow Mein / Lo Mein: Their Guyanese-Chinese fusion is excellent. It has that essential smoky flavor and is loaded with fresh vegetables.
