What Is Mauby?

First things first, what de rass is mauby? Well, if you didn’t grow up in the Caribbean, think of it as a drink that’s part sweet, part bitter, and 100% authentic. It’s a drink, made from the bark of the Colubrina arborescens tree (a small, spiny tree native to the Caribbean) usually boiled down with spices like cinnamon, cloves, and star anise—sweetened with sugar, and left to ferment a bit.

Some say it’s an acquired taste. Despite its bitterness, it’s a favorite across the Caribbean, with every island offering its own twist, but real Guyanese sip it like it’s water!

History of Mauby

Mauby’s origins trace back to the pre-colonial Caribbean when indigenous people used the bark of the tree for medicinal purposes. When African slaves and European settlers arrived in the Caribbean, mauby evolved into the drink we know today, with each culture adding its influence. Whether you sipping it at a Guyanese wedding, or it being sold on de streets, mauby is a drink with history. And trust me, de flavor? It’s unmatched.

Health Benefits of Mauby

In 2024, everyone talking ‘bout functional foods, and yuh bet mauby is on that list. Dis drink might’ve been granny’s go-to for years, but turns out, it’s full of health benefits we didn’t even know. Here’s why mauby is a wellness champion:

  • May Reduce Blood Pressure: Research suggests that regular consumption of mauby can help lower blood pressure. This is due to its vasodilatory properties, which help to relax blood vessels.
  • Supports Heart Health: Thanks to its ability to lower blood pressure, mauby may also promote heart health by improving circulation and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Properties: The bark of the mauby tree contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects, which can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases like arthritis and heart disease.
  • Rich in Antioxidants: Mauby contains antioxidants that help to fight free radicals in the body, promoting overall health and preventing cell damage.
  • Natural Diuretic: It is also known for its diuretic properties, which help to flush toxins out of the body, supporting kidney function and overall detoxification.

How to Make Mauby

Instructions

  • Boil the bark: Add the mauby bark to a large pot with water, cinnamon, cloves, and star anise. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  • Simmer: Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to fully infuse.
  • Strain: Remove from heat and strain the liquid to remove the bark and spices.
  • Add Water: While the liquid is still warm, pour 1 cup of the Mauby concentrate into a pitcher and 5 cups of water, add sugar and stir until dissolved. Adjust the sweetness to your preference.
  • Cool and Serve: Let the drink cool completely, then refrigerate. Serve cold, and add a squeeze of lime for extra flavor if you like.

Notes

You can also adjust the level of bitterness by controlling how long you let the bark steep—longer steeping leads to a stronger, more bitter taste.
